Rear axle bearings: Ford 8.8" axle
These F-150s typically use the Ford 8.8" rear axle. The rear wheel bearing is a press-in roller bearing in the end of the axle tube, and the axle shaft is held in by C-clips inside the differential. Buy the bearing and seal together.

Specs
- Rear axle
- Ford 8.8" with C-clip axle retention (10-bolt rear cover)
- Bearings per side
- 1 press-in axle bearing + 1 seal
How the job goes
- Jack up and support the rear, pull the wheels, and remove the brake drums or rotors.
- Drain the differential and remove the rear cover.
- Remove the pinion shaft lock bolt and slide out the pinion (cross) shaft.
- Push the axle shaft in, pull out the C-clip, then slide the axle out of the tube.
- Check where the bearing rides on the axle shaft. If it's pitted or grooved, you need a repair bearing (or a new axle) instead of the standard one.
- Pull the old seal and bearing with a slide-hammer puller, then drive in the new bearing and seal.
- Reinstall the axle, C-clip, pinion shaft and lock bolt, then seal the cover and refill.
Before you order
- Confirm your axle before ordering. The 8.8 has an irregular 10-bolt rear cover and the axle tag is on a cover bolt. Some heavier-duty trucks used a different axle.
- If the old bearing wore a groove into the axle shaft, a new standard bearing will fail quickly.
