Front wheel bearings: 4x4 (Dana 44 TTB)

4x4 F-150s of this era use the Dana 44 Twin Traction Beam front axle. Each front hub has a serviceable inner and outer tapered bearing, each with its own race, plus a hub seal. The easiest buy is a complete kit with both bearings, both races and the seal for each side.

How the job goes

  1. Jack up and support the truck, then pull the wheel.
  2. Remove the brake caliper and hang it.
  3. Remove the locking hub assembly from the center of the rotor.
  4. Use a 4-prong spindle nut socket to remove the locknut, lock washer, and adjusting nut.
  5. Slide the hub/rotor off. The outer bearing comes with it.
  6. Drive out the old seal and inner bearing, then drive out both races.
  7. Install the new races, pack the new bearings, install the inner bearing and a new seal.
  8. Reassemble, adjust the bearing preload per your service manual, and reinstall the locking hub.

Before you order

  • Some 1987–1989 trucks came with 'pancake' hubs that do NOT take these bearings. Check the old bearing's part number if you're unsure.
  • Follow your service manual for the adjusting-nut and locknut torque on the Dana 44.
