How the job goes

1. Warm the engine briefly, park on level ground, and shut it off.
2. Unscrew the filter housing cap on top of the engine and pull out the old element and O-ring(s).
3. Drain the oil (or extract it through the dipstick tube if that's how your engine is serviced).
4. Fit the new element and the new O-ring(s) from the kit, lightly oiled; tighten the cap to the torque on the cap or in the service manual.
5. Refill with an approved oil grade and amount from your owner's manual, run the engine, and check for leaks.

Before you order

• Check your owner's manual for the approved oil specification and capacity.
• Use a BMW-approved oil (BMW Longlife spec) in the amount your manual lists.
